Easy Almond Milk

Posted by Amy Ostroff on Wednesday, September 28, 2011,

I have a guilty-pleasure confession to make.  Every time I am about to get on a plane, I have a compulsion to buy several trashy gossip magazines.  Yeah, sometimes InStyle or Conde Nast Traveler will do it, but I most often heed the siren call of the ones with lurid tales of Brangelina's marriage and Suri Cruise's lavish wardrobe.  When I was perusing my revelatory options before our Chicago flight a couple weeks ago, something caught my eye.  A VEGAN magazine, VegNews, which ...

Travel Tips

Posted by Amy Ostroff on Tuesday, September 27, 2011,

It seems like we're always either going somewhere or getting ready to go somewhere these days.  Jonny's taken a few road-trips without me and preparation is important so that he has enough healthy snacks for the car and hotel if he's staying over.  Over the past couple of months, I've come up with a list of go-to items that work for us.  We usually bring at least one cooler packed with ice to keep the perishables fresh.  Obviously, plane travel requires scaling down the cold stuff.

Engine 2 Walnut Dressing

Posted by Amy Ostroff on Friday, September 23, 2011,

Baby spinach, brocco-slaw, chopped mixed veggies from Trader Joe's, hearts of palm and chickpeas with walnut dressing

On the first night of Jonny's plant-strong challenge, waaaay back on August 1, our now dear friend Char Nolan came over to help us get started.  It was an exciting evening, as we also got to Skype with the man himself, Rip Esselstyn.  I was optimistic and nervous.  I didn't know how Jonny would react to this radically different way of eating but he loved the first thing Char ma...

Christina's "Chicken" Salad

Posted by Amy Ostroff on Friday, September 23, 2011,

Last month, Char Nolan invited me to a really cool event sponsored by Whole Foods Devon.  It was a Farm to Table demo by the one and only Christina Pirello.  Among the delicious dishes she made that night was a deceptively easy "chicken" (tofu) salad.  I knew Jonny would love it, and boy does he.... it has turned into his go-to staple to bring to tailgates for Adrienne's field hockey games.  I tried making it with fat-free nayonaise, but he begged for the full-fat version, so now I'm mixing t...

White Bean Flatbread

Posted by Amy Ostroff on Wednesday, September 21, 2011,

We were in Chicago last weekend and we ate some amazing meals.  One of our favorite dishes was a flatbread at a restaurant called Green ZebraI attempted to recreate it a couple night ago and just heated up what was left for lunch today.  Charlie also took some to school, as his teacher was rewarding the class for good behavior with a pizza lunch and he didn't want to eat it!  (I told him it was ok to eat every once in a while, but he is SERIOUS!)

It's an easy weeknight meal with a nice sala...

Jonny's Kale Chips

Posted by Amy Ostroff on Wednesday, September 21, 2011,

Jonny says these kale chips are his "steak."  He is obsessed with them and gets cranky if we don't have an ample stock in the house, so I am spending A LOT of time making them... (honestly, I probably make them once or twice a week and once you get the process down, it takes about 1/2 hour to get them into the dehydrator.)  Speaking of the dehydrator, it is one of the three kitchen essentials I use constantly these days, the others being a Vitamix and Cuisinart food processor.  I have an

Mrs. Sexy Speaks!

Posted by Amy Ostroff on Tuesday, September 20, 2011,
Hi Everyone!

I've really enjoyed being behind the scenes here in the world of Jonny O Goes Vegan, but several people have asked Jonny about what he's been eating and frankly, HE HAS NO IDEA.  So, here I am to pipe in with a recipe from time to time and to share some thoughts of my own, since I am a new vegan too.  This is not such a drastic transition for me, since I've been vegetarian most of my life.  No one in my family was at the time I became vegetarian (age 10).  Here's how it went down:...
