Hi Everyone!

I've really enjoyed being behind the scenes here in the world of Jonny O Goes Vegan, but several people have asked Jonny about what he's been eating and frankly, HE HAS NO IDEA.  So, here I am to pipe in with a recipe from time to time and to share some thoughts of my own, since I am a new vegan too.  This is not such a drastic transition for me, since I've been vegetarian most of my life.  No one in my family was at the time I became vegetarian (age 10).  Here's how it went down: one day at camp, an older girl who I thought was really cool sat down at my table at lunch and said, "do you know what you're eating?"  She went on to describe, in dramatic detail, how meat is the muscle of an animal and from that moment on, I could not get that thought out of my mind.  Literally. I never wanted to eat meat again.  Of course, my mother had a conniption and told me that I would have to eat meat once a week until I was 16, or else I would have to get a "protein shot" from the doctor.  Yes, I fell for the protein shot threat and for some reason the most palatable evil was extremely well-done filet mignon, doused in A1 sauce.  Other than that weekly digression, my diet consisted of fruit, vegetables, pasta, yogurt, cheese and superiority as I would descend the stairs in my house with a perfume-soaked cotton ball held to my nose on nights that I found the meat or fish smell particularly offensive.

So, that is how it all began for me and it's fitting that the first recipe that I share is how we begin most days in our house.  Jonny loves this smoothie, both the taste and how it keeps him full until lunchtime.  Just don't tell him what's in it...

The Big Sexy's Smoothie
2 cups unsweetened almond milk (either vanilla or plain)

1 cup baby carrots
3 cups baby spinach
½ cup frozen blueberries
½ cup frozen mixed fruit (I use Sunshine fruit blend from Costco)
½ banana
1 scoop pea protein powder
1 T ground flaxseed
1 tsp Maca powder
1 tsp cacao powder
